What Happens in the First 24 Hours After Your House Burns Down

Nobody plans for this. But knowing what to do in the first day can make the difference between a managed crisis and total chaos.

Nobody wakes up thinking today is the day they lose their house. But it happens — and when it does, the first 24 hours are overwhelming. You're in shock, your family is displaced, and you have no idea what comes next.

Here's what actually happens, step by step — so if it ever happens to you, you're not starting from zero.

The First Few Hours

Once everyone is safe and the fire department has done their job, reality sets in fast. You need a place to sleep tonight. You need clothes for tomorrow. Your kids need their stuff for school. The dog needs food.

This is where your insurance kicks in — if you have the right coverage. Additional living expenses (ALE) coverage pays for a hotel, meals, and basic necessities while your home is being repaired or rebuilt. Most homeowners policies include it, but a lot of people don't know it's there until they need it.

Call your agent first. Not the 1-800 number on the back of your card — your actual agent. We'll get your claim started and walk you through what your policy covers so you know what you can spend without worrying.

Documentation Starts Immediately

The adjuster will come out, but you should document everything you can as soon as it's safe. Photos, videos, notes — anything that captures the damage before cleanup starts.

If you have a home inventory — even just a video walkthrough on your phone — this is when it pays off. If you don't, start writing down everything you can remember. Room by room, closet by closet. It's painful, but it matters for your claim.

What Most People Don't Expect

The emotional side hits hard. You're grieving your home, your belongings, irreplaceable things. And at the same time, people are asking you to make decisions about contractors, temporary housing, and claim paperwork.

You don't have to do it all in one day. Your agent is there to help manage the process. That's what we do — we've walked families through this before, and we'll walk you through it too.

The One Thing You Can Do Right Now

If you're reading this and your house is fine — good. Do one thing today: walk through your home with your phone and record a quick video of every room. Open the closets, the cabinets, the garage. Upload it to the cloud.

It takes 15 minutes. If you ever need it, it's worth more than you can imagine. We wrote a full guide on how to do it: Why Every Homeowner Needs a Home Inventory (And How to Make One).
