Claims
SBLI claims run through a portal operated by Swiss Re, so the address will not say SBLI. It is the right one.
A beneficiary needs the policy number and a certified death certificate. Call our office and we will start it with you rather than sending a family off to a website.
About SBLI
SBLI exists because of a fight about fairness. Louis Brandeis, later a Supreme Court justice, set up savings bank life insurance in Massachusetts in 1907 because working families were being sold expensive industrial policies door to door and losing most of what they paid in. The idea was to sell simple life insurance at cost through savings banks instead.
It is still doing that. SBLI converted to a mutual company in 2017, which means it is owned by its policyholders rather than shareholders, and it writes term and whole life for over a million families. It is licensed everywhere except New York.
Where SBLI tends to fit
SBLI tends to fit the straightforward case done cheaply: term coverage on a mortgage or an income, a small whole life policy meant to cover a funeral rather than build an estate, or a household that wants the coverage and none of the extras.
