What will my farm insurance cost?
Nobody can honestly price a farm before seeing it. Your acreage, the number and kind of buildings, your livestock, what your equipment is worth and any selling or agritourism on the farm all set the price, and every company weighs them its own way. Can you quote Farm Bureau and Nationwide?
Yes. Farm Bureau in West Virginia is The FB Insurance Company, and we write it alongside Nationwide, along with Westfield, Liberty Mutual, Farmers & Mechanics, Celina, and Municipal Mutual. Bring any quote you already have and we check it against the rest.
Will my homeowners insurance cover my farm?
No. Homeowners policies exclude farming: farm buildings, livestock, farm equipment and the liability that comes with them. If you sell produce, board horses, run cattle or keep equipment for farming, you need a farm policy. Many people find the exclusion only when they file a claim.
Do you insure hobby farms?
Yes, along with family farms, cattle and horse operations, poultry houses and larger commercial farms. A few head on the land you live on still needs a farm policy, and the hobby farm is the one most often written wrong.
Does farm insurance cover my crops?
A farm policy covers stored hay, feed and harvested products. Crops still growing in the field need federal crop insurance or a private crop-hail policy, which are separate from the farm policy.
Is my equipment covered off the farm?
Yes. A farm policy covers your equipment on and off the property, including on the road between fields you rent. Tractors and implements are listed by value, so tell us when you buy something. Equipment bought mid-season and never added is a common uncovered loss.
Do I need liability coverage if people come onto my farm?
Yes, and it needs to be farm liability, not homeowners. Anyone who comes to buy hay, pick produce, ride or hunt brings a risk a homeowners policy excludes. If you charge for any of it, tell us, because that changes the coverage.
