Jewelry Insurance in West Virginia & Ohio
Most homeowners policies cap jewelry theft somewhere around $1,500. Odds are the ring cost more than that.
Scheduled jewelry coverage insures engagement rings, wedding bands, watches, and heirloom pieces for their appraised value. It also covers losing the piece, which is how most rings go missing and which a homeowners policy doesn't pay for.

Why Your Homeowners Policy Isn't Enough
Most people figure the ring is covered because the house is. It is, up to about $1,500. Past that you're on your own, and these are the reasons why.
A theft cap that is usually $1,500 total
Standard homeowners policies put a special limit on theft of jewelry, watches, and precious stones. A single engagement ring can be five times that.
Losing it isn't the same as having it stolen
A homeowners policy covers a list of named causes. Losing a ring, dropping it down a drain, or having it vanish at the beach isn't on that list.
Your deductible comes first
A $1,000 deductible against a $1,500 cap leaves $500 for a piece that may have cost several thousand.
A claim on your home policy
Filing a jewelry claim on your homeowners policy goes on that policy's record. Standalone jewelry coverage keeps the two separate.
Special limits vary by company and policy form. We'll show you the exact number on your declarations page.
What Scheduled Jewelry Coverage Does
Each piece gets listed on the policy at an agreed value from its appraisal. If something happens, that's the number the claim starts from. Nobody has to argue about what it was worth after the fact.
Theft
From your home, your car, a hotel room, or anywhere else.
Loss
You left it at the gym or it came off in the lake. That's a claim.
Mysterious disappearance
You just don't know what happened to it. That's still a claim.
Damage
A chipped diamond, a bent prong, a watch that stops after a fall.
Lost stones
A stone falls out of the setting and is never found.
Worldwide
The same protection on vacation as it has at home.
Two ways to write it
- Scheduled on your homeowners policy. One bill, one carrier, usually the least expensive option for a piece or two.
- A standalone jewelry policy. Written by a specialty company, separate from your home insurance. A claim doesn't touch your homeowners record, and it's often the better fit for renters, collections, or higher-value pieces.
What We Need to Quote It
Appraisal or receipt
A recent appraisal, or a detailed receipt for a newer purchase.
A photo and description
Metal, stones, carat weight, and any brand or model for watches.
How you want it written
Scheduled on your homeowners policy, or on its own standalone policy. Which one makes sense depends on the piece and what else you have with us.
If your appraisal is more than a few years old, it's probably low. Gold and diamond prices have moved a lot. It's worth getting it updated before you insure the piece.
Frequently Asked Questions
How much does jewelry insurance cost?
Most scheduled jewelry coverage runs somewhere around 1% to 2% of the appraised value a year. So a $10,000 engagement ring is usually $100 to $200 a year to insure. It depends on the company, where you live, and whether we schedule it on your homeowners policy or write it on its own.
Does my homeowners policy already cover my ring?
Only partly. A standard homeowners policy caps theft of jewelry, watches, and precious stones at a special limit, usually $1,500 total, and your deductible still comes off that. And if you lose the ring, drop it down a drain, or a stone falls out of the setting, that's typically not covered at all unless the piece is scheduled.
Do I need an appraisal?
For most pieces, yes. Companies generally want a recent appraisal, or a detailed sales receipt that describes the piece, the metal, and the stones. A lot of them will take a receipt on a newer purchase and ask for an appraisal on older or higher-value items. We'll tell you exactly what yours needs.
Is there a deductible?
Usually not, or a very small one. That's a big difference from filing the same loss on your homeowners policy. Some companies will let you take a deductible in exchange for a lower premium if you want to go that way.
What happens if I lose a stone or the ring gets damaged?
That's exactly what this coverage is for. A lost stone, a bent prong, a cracked setting, a watch that quits after you drop it. Most companies will repair the piece or replace it with one of like kind and quality, and a lot of them will let you use your own jeweler.
Is the coverage good when I travel?
Yes. Scheduled jewelry coverage is typically worldwide, so the ring is covered on a cruise, at the beach, or overseas the same as it is at home.
